Cheri had been staying at our Sister’s Warming Room for several weeks. Cheri told us that she was nervous about what would happen when we closed the Warming Room. She was using heroin daily. What is more, she had to begin dialysis because her kidneys were no longer functioning on their own. We were able to connect Cheri to the Milwaukee County Housing Division, who was able to provide her a hotel voucher because of her medical needs.
With a hotel room to look forward to the next day, she asked if we could take her to a new 24 -hour treatment clinic that could provide her with Medication Assisted Therapy for her opioid use disorder. Cheri continued treatment and dialysis, checking in with us every day for encouragement and support. The Housing Division moved her to a Safe Haven while she waited for an apartment voucher. At the Safe Haven, she encouraged others to try treatment, telling them it could help them like it was helping her.
Cheri’s navigator helped her find an apartment of her own, and a Sisters Advocate helped her furnish it with donated items. She continues individual counseling and wants to be part of our street outreach work to encourage others. She can’t wait to join the Sisters Leadership Circle, and looks forward to becoming a peer advocate.
Cheri’s success is a result of her resilience and the Benedict Center’s effective services, advocacy, and strategic partnerships.
